How to Use Colonial Williamsburg Electronic Field Trips
To use the complete Electronic Field Trip program and participate
in the broadcast

To use the Electronic Field Trip program anytime during the
school year
To use the complete Electronic Field Trip program and participate in the broadcast:
PRE-BROADCAST
- Be sure you can receive the broadcast prior to the day of the event.
- OR make sure you are able to access the live video stream of the program
- Set up room for viewing including all the equipment needed (television or computer and projector, telephone, etc.).
CLASSROOM PREPARATION
- Download the Teacher Guide from the website and print if desired.
Read the Teacher Guide.
- Prepare materials for lessons: make overheads or print copies of primary sources, graphic organizers and pictures.
- Share historical background information, glossary, and timeline with students.
- Review background information, glossary, and timeline. Answers questions as needed.
- Provide students with URL www.history.org/trips, user ID, and password to access the web site.
- Let students explore the on-line activities and take part in the on-line vote.
- Have students begin to develop questions to call-in or submit on-line during week of the broadcast.
30 MINUTES PRIOR TO BROADCAST
- Access the video stream on the website and projector, or turn on the television.
- Be sure phone is available for call-in and that the 800 number is posted by the phone.
DURING BROADCAST
- Have students take notes or jot down questions that come to mind while viewing the Electronic Field Trip.
- Have selected student(s) prepared to ask a question call in on the phone.
- Turn down the volume on the computer or television if student’s call is selected for broadcast.
- Student must ask their question clearly and distinctly when asked to by the host on-air.
AFTER BROADCAST
- Allow students to submit unanswered questions by email or on message board.
- Students may continue to explore student activities.
- Initiate or continue lessons, extensions, and final evaluation as provided in the teacher’s guide.
- If desired, send copies of students’ work to Colonial Williamsburg at address provided in Teacher Guide.
- Be sure students have URL www.history.org/trips, user ID, and password so that they can access on-line activities or message board on their own time.
- Thank your local broadcaster if you watched on television.

- Students may continue to explore student activities.
- Initiate or continue lessons, extensions, and final evaluation as provided in the teacher’s guide.
- If desired, send copies of students’ work to Colonial Williamsburg at address provided in Teacher Guide.
