You're Invited to a Garden Party

A Celebration of  May: An Immersive Palace Garden Party

Take time to go back to an 18th-century Palace Garden Party “of the mind and the heart." Thomas Jefferson, the last governor to reside at the Palace, opens the gates and invites residents of the colonial community—both gentry and tradespeople alike—to a fun-filled May celebration on the Palace grounds. Guests of the 21st century will wear 18th-century clothing and be fully immersed in the colonial landscape of traditional music, dancing, theatrics, and games.

Drummers Call

Join Musicians Across the Country

Celebrate the traditions of 18th-century military music and explore the important roles played by fifers and drummers. Units from across the United States join Colonial Williamsburg's Fifes and Drums to perform grand displays of period music. You'll want to respond to the Drummers Call--a call beaten by the duty fifer and drummer to mass the regimental musicians for the playing of ceremonies such as Reveille, Retreat, and Tattoo.

Return of the Cherokee

Learn Cherokee Songs and Dances

In 1777, a delegation of 40 Cherokee—one of many over the years—arrived in Williamsburg and met with the governor and Council, who offered peace and friendship to the Cherokee Great Men of Chota. The Cherokee returned the favor by offering the governor and the people of Williamsburg "A Public Dance." Join Colonial Williamsburg and the Museum of the Cherokee with members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee as they perform traditional songs and dances, and interpret the culture of the period.

July 4 Celebration

Celebrate our Nation's Independence

Celebrate the anniversary of the nation's birth in the 18th Century City! Join Colonial Williamsburg for a special militia muster. Enjoy a salute to the 13 original states, featuring music performed by the Fifes and Drums, a display of the flags of each state, and the firing of muskets and cannon. The day concludes with fireworks visible from both Market Square and Palace Green.

Grand Illumination

Fireworks and More

In the 18th century, illuminations--the firing of guns and lighting of fireworks--celebrated major events such as the birthday of a reigning sovereign, military victories, or the arrival of a new colonial governor. Join Colonial Williamsburg for this special day by strolling the Revolutionary City and viewing all the unique decorations. Enjoy musical performances on multiple stages throughout the Historic Area and fireworks displays from the Capitol, the Magazine, and the Palace.
